What is an Antenatal Scan?

Explore antenatal scans: early trimester ultrasounds track fetal development, mid-trimester anomaly scans ensure health, and late trimester growth scans monitor baby's progress.

Regular scans that let Gynaecologists identify and treat potential health problems are called Antenatal scans. Doctors provide a pregnancy to-do list aided by the results of these scans. They cover the health of the developing fetus and the pregnant woman.

Different Types of Antenatal Scans

There are different types of antenatal scans offered at different stages of the pregnancy.

  • First-trimester ultrasound scans can verify that the pregnancy is in the uterus and not ectopic. They also check for the baby’s heartbeat, the number of babies in the uterus, and abnormal placenta.
  • The next important scan is the combined screening test offered between weeks 11 to 13. This includes an ultrasound scan and blood test to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities like Down’s syndrome.
  • A second-trimester antenatal scan can further check the baby’s position, heartbeat and movement, umbilical cord blood flow to the uterus, and location of the placenta. This scan also determines the cervical length and a previous c-section scar and assesses the amount of amniotic fluids in the uterus.
  • The next antenatal scan is suggested in the third trimester. It checks on the baby’s growth, amniotic fluid level, placenta ageing, and baby’s position to determine the type of delivery.
