There are a few ways to make some gil in FFXIV. The key is keeping up with new content and identifying niche markets. Ocean fishing wasn't created as a method of making gil but it's an excellent way to level your fisherman quickly and earn some achievements. The market board is another great source of income.

Crafting

Although Blacksmithing and Armorer crafters are major gil sinks due to the power-up costs for gear and weapons, gathering classes have great gil-making potential in FFXIV. Gatherers harvest natural resources throughout Eorzea and can sell them on the market board for a decent profit. Some of these materials are hard to find and can fetch a high price. For example, Diadem materials sell well on the market board since players need them for their Restoration turn-ins. Other popular items include dyes from optional content. They’re often purchasable with seals earned from raids, trials, and dungeons, so they’re in constant demand.

Finally, carpenters can earn a steady flow of Gil by crafting furniture items for homeowners. While this might seem like a small market, there are enough homeowners in the game that it’s worth tapping into with your woodworking skills. Moreover, homeowners tend to spend their Gil to fix furniture glitches, so you’ll have a reliable customer base for your goods.

Gathering

There's an ongoing trend among FFXIV players to really make their characters stand out, which often requires a lot of glamour gear. These outfits are hard to make, and can cost millions in gil, but the demand exists. Updates to the game frequently add new glamour gear, so it's a good idea for gatherers to keep an eye out.

Overworld mobs frequently drop crafting materials that can be sold to NPC vendors for a decent profit.
